Keystone Ridge Designs products are engineered for durability, but proper care ensures long-term performance and appearance. Follow these maintenance guidelines to help preserve the structural integrity and finish of your site furnishings.
Powder Coated Steel Care & Maintenance
Clean surfaces regularly using a soft cloth or towel with a diluted all-purpose cleaner. Recommended brands include Simple Green® or Formula 409®. Avoid abrasive pads or cleaners that could scratch the finish. Also avoid high-pressure washing that can damage the powder coat.
Always follow manufacturer instructions when using any cleaning or maintenance product. Do not use acids or harsh solvents, as these will permanently damage the powder coat finish.
To maintain the powder coat luster, apply a light buffing cream or wax with a soft cloth as needed. Suggested brands would include Meguiar’s® or Turtle Wax®. These products can be found at most automotive retailers.
Graffiti can typically be removed using lacquer thinner. Dampen a cloth with lacquer thinner and gently rub the affected area until clean. Follow with a thorough cleaning as described above. Always test a small area first.
Minor damage to the finish may be remedied with color-matched touch-up paint. Touch-up paint can be obtained free of charge by calling our Customer Service Department at 800-284-8208.
Periodically inspect surface-mounted products to ensure they remain securely fastened and have not loosened due to use or environmental exposure. Re-tighten bolts and hardware as needed.
If snow or ice must be removed, use plastic shovels and avoid rock salt or de-icing chemicals that may harm the finish or surrounding landscape.
Ensure the area around surface-mounted or freestanding furniture allows for proper drainage. Standing water can lead to premature corrosion at connection points over time.
Wood Care & Maintenance
To clean Ipe, use a soft bristle brush and a mild soap-and-water solution or a wood-specific cleaner designed for hardwood decking (e.g., Messmer’s Wood & Deck Cleaner or Defy Wood Cleaner). Rinse thoroughly with a hose and allow the wood to dry completely before applying any oil or finish. Avoid bleach-based cleaners or harsh chemicals that can strip the natural oils. Also avoid high-pressure washers that can damage the surface fibers. Use a mild wood cleaner or soft bristle brush for deep cleaning.
Ipe is a dense, durable exotic hardwood that naturally resists rot, decay, and insect damage. When exposed to the elements, it will gradually develop a silvery-gray patina similar to teak. This change is purely cosmetic and does not affect the wood’s performance.
To restore and maintain Ipe’s natural luster, we recommend using Ipe Oil™, a specially formulated wood finish that enhances appearance and provides UV protection.
-
Remove all dirt and debris from the surface and between slats.
-
Rinse with a garden hose and let dry completely (typically 24 hours).
-
Apply Ipe Oil™ using a paint brush, roller, or lint-free cloth.
-
After 5–10 minutes, wipe away any excess or pooled liquid with a dry rag.
-
Let the surface dry thoroughly before use (usually 24–48 hours).
-
Always follow the application instructions on the product label.
-
Used rags soaked in Ipe Oil™ are flammable and may spontaneously combust. Dispose of rags and product containers properly according to local hazardous waste guidelines. Never leave used rags exposed to air or sunlight.
FOR BEST RESULTS: Avoid applying:
-
Under full sun
-
If rain is forecast within 24 hours
-
In extreme hot or cold temperatures
-
More than once per season
Reapply every 6–12 months, or as needed based on climate and exposure. Spot applications can be done on areas that weather more quickly.
Inspect Ipe products at least twice a year—typically in the spring and fall—for loose fasteners, fading, surface debris, or signs of mold or mildew. Prompt maintenance extends product life and keeps the surface looking its best.
Other Maintenance Tips
Avoid storing your site furnishings in their packaging for extended periods after delivery. Shipping wrap and cardboard can trap moisture, leading to condensation and potential damage to the powder-coated finish. For best results, unwrap and inspect all items promptly upon arrival and store them in a dry, ventilated area until installation.
At the change of seasons, inspect all furnishings for any buildup of debris, corrosion around anchors, or wear on high-contact surfaces. Address issues promptly to prevent long-term damage.
We recommend using high-quality, corrosion-resistant hardware—such as stainless steel or zinc-coated fasteners—to ensure structural stability and prevent rust at connection points. Inferior hardware can compromise the integrity of the installation over time, especially in outdoor environments exposed to moisture, salt, or frequent use. Regularly inspect and tighten hardware, and replace any worn or rusted components with durable, commercial-grade alternatives.
To ensure smooth operation and prevent wear, the hinges on litter receptacle doors should be oiled annually. Apply a light machine oil or silicone-based lubricant to the hinge mechanism as part of your regular maintenance schedule. This reduces friction, protects against corrosion, and helps prevent squeaking or sticking.
Always close and secure umbrellas during high winds, storms, or when not in use for extended periods. Leaving umbrellas open in inclement weather can result in damage to the canopy, frame, or surrounding furnishings. In extreme conditions or for seasonal closures, we recommend removing and storing umbrellas in a dry, sheltered location.
Our Adirondack chairs and the slats used in recycled plastic benches are crafted from a durable, weather-resistant polymer that won’t rot, splinter, or require sealing, painting, or staining.
To keep your products looking their best, clean them regularly with mild soap and water using a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid pressure washing, which can damage the surface. The stainless steel hardware used in assembly is low-maintenance, but in coastal environments, we recommend periodically rinsing or wiping it down to prevent salt buildup. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they may damage the surface finish.
When relocating benches, tables, or other site furnishings, always lift and carry them rather than sliding or pushing. Dragging furniture across hard surfaces can damage the powder coat finish, distort legs or mounting hardware, and compromise product integrity over time. Use proper lifting techniques and equipment when needed to protect you, the product, and the surface beneath it.
